D. Gillian Thompson, BA (UBC), MA (Stanford), PhD (UBC), is Professor Emerita of History of the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB, Canada, where she was a member of the Department of History in 1972-2005. A specialist in French history, she published articles and a monograph on the history of the Jesuit province of France in the eighteenth century. She taught courses in European social and religious history. A founder of UNB's Women's Studies Programme in 1986, she was pleased that her courses on women's history were always much in demand. In 2006, following the example of her great-grandfather, she retired to a place near the sea: to her home town, Victoria BC. There, she designed and oversaw the building of a new house in which she has lived very happily with a UNB colleague since 2008.
